Do You Need a License to Rent a Moped in Hawaii?

Yes. You need a valid driver’s license to operate a moped in Hawaii.

If you’re visiting Waikiki and thinking about renting a moped to explore Honolulu and Oahu, there are a few other requirements you should know before booking.

The requirements also change depending on whether you’re renting a traditional 50cc moped or a larger 150cc scooter.

Here’s the simple breakdown.

Do You Need a Motorcycle License for a 50cc Moped in Hawaii?

For a standard 50cc moped, Hawaii requires the rider to have a valid driver’s license. Hawaii law does not require the rider to hold a motorcycle license simply to operate a qualifying moped.

At Waikiki Mopeds, renters of our Solei’l GT 50cc must:

Be at least 18 years old
Have a valid driver’s license
Have a major credit card available at check-in

Our 50cc rental is designed for one rider.

What If My Driver’s License Is From Outside Hawaii?

Visitors don’t necessarily need a Hawaii driver’s license just because they’re vacationing here.

Hawaii law recognizes certain valid out-of-state licenses for drivers who are at least 18, including equivalent licenses issued by other U.S. states and several U.S. territories and Canadian provinces.

What About a 150cc Scooter?

The requirements are different for our larger 150cc option.

Waikiki Mopeds requires renters of the Solei’l RX 150cc to:

Be at least 21 years old
Have a valid motorcycle license
Have a major credit card available at check-in

The 150cc also seats two people, unlike the standard single-rider 50cc moped.

So if you’re traveling as a couple and want to ride together, the 150cc may be an option if the driver meets the motorcycle-license requirement.

Do You Have to Wear a Helmet on a Moped in Hawaii?

Yes.

Hawaii updated its moped law in 2025, and helmets are now mandatory for all moped drivers regardless of age.

Waikiki Mopeds’ 50cc rental includes a helmet, along with a chain and lock.

Even if you’re only taking a short ride around Waikiki or Diamond Head, wear the helmet and make sure it is secured properly before you start riding.

Can Two People Ride on One 50cc Moped?

No.

Hawaii law says a traditional moped cannot carry another person. The driver is the only person who can ride it.

If two people in your group both meet the rental requirements, you can each rent your own 50cc moped.

If you want to ride together on one vehicle, qualified riders can look at our larger two-passenger 150cc option.

What Should I Bring When I Pick Up My Rental?

Keep it simple.

Bring:

Your valid driver’s license
A major credit card
Comfortable clothing for riding
Your phone
Sunscreen and water if you’re heading out for the day

Your exact requirements depend on which vehicle you’re renting, so make sure you reserve the option that matches your license.

Can I Ride a Moped Anywhere on Oahu?

Not everywhere.

Traditional mopeds cannot be ridden on Hawaii freeways, and riders must follow Hawaii traffic laws and moped-specific road rules.

That doesn’t mean you need a freeway to have a great ride.

Starting in Waikiki puts you close to places like Kapiʻolani Park, Diamond Head, Kahala and East Honolulu.

Is a Moped a Good Option for First-Time Visitors?

For many visitors, a 50cc moped can be a fun way to get outside Waikiki and explore at your own pace.

But riding in an unfamiliar city is different from walking around the resort district.

Take time to get comfortable with the vehicle, pay attention to traffic and road signs, and don’t try to cover too much distance just because you’re on vacation.
