Best Places to Ride a Moped From Waikiki: 5 Scenic Oahu Stops

Waikiki is a great place to stay, but some of the best parts of Oahu begin when you get outside the hotel district.

Renting a moped gives you the freedom to explore Honolulu at your own pace, stop when you see something interesting, grab food along the way and enjoy the island without spending your entire day inside a car.

If you’re wondering where to ride a moped from Waikiki, here are some of our favorite places to explore heading toward Diamond Head and East Oahu.

Start Your Ride in Waikiki

Waikiki Mopeds is located right in Waikiki, so you don’t need to travel across Honolulu just to begin your adventure.

Once you’ve picked up your moped, you can head toward the Diamond Head side of Waikiki and quickly start seeing a different side of Honolulu.

You don’t need to try to circle the entire island to have a great day. In fact, some of the best rides are relatively close to Waikiki.

Take your time, make a few stops and enjoy the ride itself.

Kapiʻolani Park

One of the easiest places to start exploring is Kapiʻolani Park, at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

The area gives you great views toward Diamond Head while keeping you close to Waikiki. It’s an especially good first stop if you’re getting comfortable with your moped before heading farther away from the hotel district.

From here, you can continue toward Diamond Head and follow the coastline east.

Waikiki Mopeds tip: Don’t rush out of Waikiki and immediately try to cover huge distances. Give yourself a little time to get comfortable with the moped and Honolulu traffic first.

Diamond Head and Diamond Head Beach

Continue around Diamond Head and you’ll start getting some of the views people picture when they imagine riding around Hawaii.

The coastline around Diamond Head Beach is one of our favorite areas near Waikiki. You’ll find ocean views, the slopes of Diamond Head behind you and several places where you can stop and enjoy the scenery.

It’s close enough to Waikiki that you don’t need a full-day island expedition to experience it.

If you’re planning to actually enter Diamond Head State Monument, keep in mind that non-Hawaii residents currently need advance reservations for entry, and parking reservations can sell out.

But you don’t need to enter the crater to enjoy riding around the Diamond Head area.

Photo opportunity: Park somewhere legally and safely with Diamond Head or the ocean behind the moped. This is one of the best spots to get that Hawaii vacation photo.

Kahala

Keep heading east and Waikiki begins to feel farther away.

Kahala is quieter and more residential, with palm-lined streets and beautiful stretches of coastline. It gives visitors a completely different feel from the high-rise hotels and busy sidewalks of Waikiki.

This is a good area to slow the day down.

Find somewhere appropriate to stop, take in the ocean and decide whether you want to head back toward Waikiki or continue farther east.

One of the best things about exploring Oahu on a moped is that you don’t need a strict tour schedule. If you find somewhere you like, stay awhile.

Maunalua Bay and Hawaiʻi Kai

For riders who want to continue farther east, Maunalua Bay and Hawaiʻi Kai offer another major change in scenery.

The area opens up with wide views across the water and mountains behind the neighborhoods. It’s also a convenient point to take a break, get food or decide whether continuing farther makes sense for you.

By this point, you’re well outside the main Waikiki tourist district.

That’s part of what makes renting a moped fun: within the same day you can experience the busy streets of Waikiki, the scenery around Diamond Head and the quieter coastal areas of East Honolulu.

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is one of the most dramatic coastal areas on the east side of Honolulu, with open ocean and rugged volcanic scenery.

It is also considerably farther from Waikiki than the earlier stops, so this isn’t something every rider needs to include.

If you’re considering riding farther east, think about your experience level, traffic, weather, how much daylight you have left and which vehicle you’re renting. Ask the Waikiki Mopeds staff about your plans before heading out if you’re unsure.

And while Sandy Beach is beautiful to look at, its powerful shore break is well known. You don’t have to get into the water to enjoy the stop.

How Far Should You Go on Your Moped?

You don’t need to see everything in one day.

If you’re new to riding, a relaxed Waikiki → Diamond Head → Kahala outing can already make for a great afternoon.

If you’re comfortable riding and have more time, you can consider exploring farther toward Hawaiʻi Kai and East Honolulu.

The biggest mistake is turning your vacation into a race from one landmark to another.

Pick a few places you genuinely want to see and leave yourself enough time to enjoy them.

Important Hawaii Moped Rules Before You Go

Before heading out, make sure you understand the rules for the vehicle you’re riding.

Hawaii currently requires moped operators to have a valid driver’s license, and helmets are mandatory for moped drivers. HDOT also notes that mopeds must follow applicable traffic laws.

Traditional mopeds cannot be ridden on freeways. On normal roadways, riders traveling slower than traffic generally need to remain as near the right side as practicable, subject to safety exceptions. Mopeds may not be ridden on sidewalks.

Where roadway bicycle lanes are provided, Hawaii law generally requires moped riders to use them.

Most importantly: don’t blindly follow a navigation app onto a road that isn’t appropriate for your moped.

What Should You Bring?

You don’t need to pack like you’re crossing the island on an expedition.

Bring your driver’s license, water, sunscreen and a charged phone. Dress for the weather and remember that conditions can change as you move around Oahu.
